Tom Selleck: “Lady Diana was charming, lovely!” [Exclusive Interview]

At 73, Tom Selleck is probably the only actor who have been a lead actor on TV for the last four decades. Now Frank Reagan: "Blue Bloods", the one who was "Magnum" gives us his impressions on the reboot of the series. He fondly remembers his meeting with Lady Diana ... 33 years ago. Interview in New York.

You are shooting the nine season of :”Blue Bloods”. Did you know the show had this potential from the beginning and did it change a lot ?

Tom Selleck: It did change a lot and I thought it had the potential otherwise I probably wouldn’t have done it! Actors have appetite and I have been kind of blessed most of the time in the sense that areas my appetite was and people wants to see me in that arena. And that was certainly the case in this. I didn’t think about the people who want to see me, I thought about whether it will be interested me and I thought it was the case because it’s a character driven show. The show can grow and change because it’s not a procedural. We do shows about crimes but how they affect people particularly the main characters in the families.

Politics have changed a lot since the beginning of the show. Do you feel it does shape in some ways the show?

Tom Selleck : Politics affect every character in the show. The changing tone of the times is different and that affects Frank in so many ways. He has political bosses: the mayor, they don’t always agree, in fact often they don’t. The all idea of policing is evolving and changing. We try to deal with that. I think it’s made the show better because we deal it in a way that it keeps people…We’re not doing a show about issues but those issues come up all the time. Dealing with it threw characters allows us to show different point of views which have the success of the show over nine years with this changing political environment.

Magnum the reboot, can you give us your sincere opinion about it and did you watch it?

Tom Selleck: Actually, I haven’t seen it because I have been busy. They did talk to me. CBS was nice enough to come me with Les who was here the. They frankly said: “look if you really feel strong about it, we won’t do it”. I really thought about that and I said: “Let me go home and think”. And I realize my show Magnum is a different show and it get a great bower out, we were in the Simpsonians institution, we were the number one show when we went off the air. The question I get all the time is: “Are you offended?”. And I really think, particularly in the times we’re living in, it’s a good thing to say getting offended is a choice and I choose not to be offended. I wish them well and successes is way too hard to come by. It won’t be our show, it doesn’t look like our show in the promo, it’s their show and I wish them well.

No intention to do a cameo?

Tom Selleck : I have absolutely no intention to do a cameo. It’s not vindictiveness or anger or pettiness, it just would distract from Blue Bloods and I love the show, I love Blue Bloods and the people working in it. Anything like that just pull the reality of what I’m doing. So no I wouldn’t do that!

Hannah your daughter has won so many tournaments. How proud are you?

Tom Selleck : I’m very proud of my daughter. She found her own way. She started to ride when she was four. It’s expensive, I have to keep working but she works at it. Mostly is just where her heart and soul is. Sometimes your talent is where your dreams are, her dreams involve riding. She’s just Grand Prix now and that’s five/six feet. She is a very good rider, I try not to worry about it. She’s made her own way. Other than that the curiosity of her last name hasn’t mean anything in the riding world.

If you would have to choose the most emotional moment between those two: Dancing with Lady Diana and be Monica’s boyfriend on:” Friends” which one would it be?

Tom Selleck :One is an acting, there was a personal element with Courtney and I that I enjoyed. But dancing with Princess Diana it was a very big white house diner. My wife Jillie danced with the prince twice. He asked her to dance a second time, that’s a real validation. A quick story, I am sitting with Clint Eastwood standing over in a corner hiding because we’re both a little shy. She’s danced with John Travolta and some of the aides come over and said: «they’re going to do another dance, she can’t dance twice, you have to cut it”. And I’m saying: “I’m not cutting it on John Travolta!”. What happened is that when they finished that dance, I danced wit her. We had a thing when I went to school where you learned the correct way to dance, I didn’t go. I kind of wasted the time apologizing of how I was dancing. But I don’t know what I could ask her, she was just charming, lovely.

Tom Selleck : « Danser avec Lady Di fut un grand moment !»

A 73 ans, Tom Selleck continue une carrière sans fausse note. Héros de la série : « Blue Bloods », celui qui fut « Magnum » nous donne ses impressions sur le reboot de la série. Il se souvient aussi avec tendresse de sa rencontre avec Lady Diana..il y a 33 ans. Interview à New-York.

Vous tournez actuellement la neuvième saison de “Blue Bloods”. Saviez-vous que la série avait ce potentiel pour durer et a-t-elle beaucoup changé ?

Tom Selleck: La série a effectivement pas mal changé en neuf ans. Je savais qu’elle avait le potentiel de durer sinon je ne me serai pas lancé dans l’aventure ! Nous ne faisons pas simplement une série qui résout des enquêtes et des crimes mais qui se concentre surtout sur l’affectif de ceux qui sont mêlés à ces histoires. Et la famille Reagan en premier lieu évidemment !

Le paysage politique s’est trouvé bouleversé ces derniers temps aux Etats-Unis. Est-ce que cela affecte également la série ?

Tom Selleck :La politique affecte tous les personnages de la série. Le ton a changé ! Il y a des oppositions.  Le maire et Frank ne sont pas toujours d’accord…. L’idée générale du maintien de l’ordre évolue aussi. Montrer différents points de vue, c’est ce qui fait le succès de la série depuis neuf ans et ce monde politique en pleine mutation aide évidemment à insuffler un nouveau souffle aux scénarios.

Magnum le reboot : qu’en pensez-vous sincèrement et l’avez-vous regardé ?

Tom Selleck: En fait, je n’ai encore pu le regarder par faute de temps ! La chaine CBS a eu la gentillesse de me demander mon avis avant de lancer le projet. Ils m’ont dit franchement : “Si tu n’es vraiment pas pour, nous ne le ferons pas”. Je leur ai demandé de me laisser un temps de réflexion. La question que l’on me pose tout le temps est: “Es-tu offensé?”. Je pense vraiment qu’à notre époque, pouvoir s’offusquer est une liberté et j’ai choisi de ne pas l’être. Je leur souhaite d’obtenir un vrai succès et à la télévision de nos jours, ce n’est pas évident…. Cette série n’a rien à voir avec celle que j’ai tourné il y a trente ans et donc je leur souhaite vraiment le meilleur !

Aucune intention de faire un caméo donc ?

Tom Selleck :Je n’ai absolument aucune intention de faire un caméo. Ce n’est pas de la mauvaise volonté ou de la mesquinerie mais une telle démarche serait contraire au bon fonctionnement de :  Blue Bloods  donc non, je ne ferais pas ça car aujourd’hui je suis entièrement dévoué à cette série et son équipe.

Après toutes ces années, pouvez-vous nous révéler un secret du tournage de : Magnum  ?

Tom Selleck :Nous avions pas mal de rituels avec toute l’équipe. Mais avec Roger E. Mosley qui jouait T.C .dans la série, nous avions tourné un film horrible ensemble qui s’appelait (en anglais) : « Turmoil Island ». Et la première chose que nous avons décidé en nous retrouvant dans : »Magnum » , c’est  la promesse suivante: « aucun de nous deux ne parlera de ce film ». Mais  évidemment c’est sorti en vidéo et nous n’avions donc pas réussi à garder ce secret assez longtemps.

Hannah votre fille est une cavalière hors-pair. Etes-vous fier ?

Tom Selleck: Je suis très fier de ma fille. Elle a trouvé sa propre voie. Elle a commencé à monter à l’âge de quatre ans. Sa passion me coute cher et je dois continuer à travailler mais c’est là que se trouvent son cœur et son âme. Parfois, votre talent est là où sont vos rêves, et le sien est l’équitation.  C’est une très bonne cavalière, j’essaie de ne pas m’en faire. Et son nom de famille n’a rien à voir avec sa réussite car dans cet univers personne ne connait ce nom !

Si vous deviez choisir le moment le plus mémorable entre : faire danser Lady Diana et être le petit ami de Monica dans : “Friends » ?

 Tom Selleck: Danser avec la princesse Diana fut un honneur et un grand moment Ma femme Jillie a dansé avec le prince Charles à deux reprises, c’est une vraie validation. Pour ma part j’étais suis assis avec Clint Eastwood et nous nous cachions dans un coin car nous sommes tous les deux un peu timides. Lady Di avait déjà dansé avec John Travolta et ses assistants sont venus nous dire : ” Elle ne peut pas danser deux fois avec la même personne, c’est à vous !”. Et là je dis : “Je ne peux passer après John Travolta!”. Mais j’ai dû y aller Je n’avais jamais pris un seul cours de danse de ma vie ! Une fois sur la piste, j’ai en quelque sorte perdu mon temps à m’excuser de ma maladresse mais, elle était charmante vraiment charmante…

La réussite ne vous a jamais monté à la tête ou perturbé ?

Tom Selleck :J’avais 35 ans lorsque j’ai décroché  Magnum , avant j’étais la plupart du temps au chômage donc cela m’a aidé à garder les pieds sur terre. Et puis j’ai toujours eu ma famille et ça aussi c’est très important. Je ne me considère pas comme un héros de série TV mais comme un frère pour tous ceux qui me suivent. Enfin je suis bien dans ma peau et lorsque je joue Frank Reagan, je n’essaie pas de jouer mon père. Et puis je n’essaie pas de guérir qui se soit du cancer, je ne fais que des grimaces devant une caméra.
