CHARMED : Exclusive Interview with Madeleine Mantock, Melonie Diaz and Sarah Jeffery.

With an overall 1.54 millions viewers, Charmed debuted on CW right after Supergirl with strong ratings. Truthcelebs met with those three charming actresses.

Can you just introduce us to your characters a bit more, give us a quick background, and powers, or how they fit into the story?

Sarah J:   I play Maggie Vera, the youngest sister out of the three, and she’s a lot of fun. She reads minds, which is a testament to her sensitivity and her empathy, and I relate to that on a personal level, and I just think she’s a lot of fun. She’s playful.

Madeleine:   She won’t say it, but she’s the comic relief.

Sarah J:    Thank you. She is. I do have a lot of fun playing her, and it’s only been the pilot, so I’m excited to get to know her even more.

Madeleine M:  I play Macy Vaughn, and she’s a half-sister, so she meets these two in the pilot. Doesn’t know that she has any outside family, and her father’s just passed away and she never grew up with her mother, so she’s kind of lonely. She’s really smart, she’s a scientist, she’s moved to town, she’s got a new job. And she works in the lab at university, so I feel like our paths will … I mean, obviously not, we know we’re sisters. And I think it’s quite cool that we have a sort of portal that we can all intertwine and-

Sarah J:     Yes, the college.

Madeleine M:   And her power’s telekinesis. She can read stuff with her mind. And she’s already quite good at it because I think we’re saying because she’s smart, she’s really good at it already.

Sarah J: It’s that high IQ; comes in handy.

Madeleine M:   But a little bit of an over thinker, too.

Melonie D: I stop time. First, she thinks that she’s the oldest sister to her and then we realize that we have another sister. And she is an activist, she is a TA, a teacher. She’s the most excited by far to be a witch, so she really embraces the power and encourages her sister to join the fight to save the world.

What was your pre-existing relationship with Charmed? Did you come to this having seen it, not seen it, never heard of it?

Sarah J:     I was definitely very aware of it. I think I was I missed the stage where I would have been a crazed fan, I wasn’t quite in that demographic, but I was very aware of it, and that it had such a huge cult following for a very good reason.  I just felt blessed to be a part of something that already had such a beloved fan base. If we started, I wanted to watch the pilot to see sort of the little Easter eggs that we had in our pilot, and we paid homage. I was just really excited, I thought oh wow, how wonderful to have a new generation of witches. I thought it was great.

Melonie D:    It was one of those things to me it was always on in the background. My cousin’s house, my sister’s house. It was always present on television. It still is, kind of. Because it’s pretty much the same generation, it’s only been like 12 years of a lot of the response from the former castmates were like, it feels too soon, the show is really strong in syndication still. It’s sort of still our generation. Does that feel like maybe it is they’re taking it and starting from scratch?

Madeleine M:   Yes, it’s too soon, but it’s really a different time. I mean, with social media alone, it changed the game of how young people relate to television and media, and with the Me Too movement, it’s … so I think our show is really going to help things, and really modernize it in a different way.

The witches also have a different cultural background at the time, how does that impact the show and why do you think that’s important?

Madeleine M:    I’m really excited about the aspects of it, I know Jenny wants to – not just the culture of our own separate characters, but just magic as a whole. Like, how it’s different across cultures, all around the world, and I’m really excited to explore that. It can help us have much more interesting and a diverse cast, aside from just [inaudible 00:02:42] You can come in and see what they do.

Melonie D:  Magic is different in China than in distant like, Bali, and I think that kind of widens our … what we can do with magic. It connects to other people.

Do you believe in witchcraft, or supernatural, any of you?

Melonie D:  Oh my God, yes. All the time, I mean I feel like it’s kind of silly not to, there’s bigger things than us.

Sarah J:    Yes, I mean I don’t necessarily believe in Harry Potter type magic, but it’s definitely been an influence.

Madeleine:   You don’t have a wand?

Sarah J:     I do, actually. From Harry Potter World. But, it’s definitely present in my life, at least. I feel very connected to that other worldly, spiritual realm, whatever it is. So, it’s very exciting to be a part of a show that explores that.

Melonie D:  And I think I manifested this job.

Melonie D:  Yes, I think I did because I’ve always loved The Craft, and those kind of movies, and just the idea that as witches you can do and be anything.

Madeleine:   Ever since I saw Matilda, I started a Tweet the other day and it said that somebody used to think as a kid they could like, change a stoplight. I’ve always had that, but I think I am more on the side of caution in terms of real life witchcraft because my mum always said we shouldn’t – Yes, you shouldn’t mess with spirits, and so  I feel like there is something, but I’m not delving into it.

Melonie D:  Yes I don’t want to mess with it too much.

Sarah J:   I wanna talk with all of them. And like, who are they?

Interview Franck Ragaine

Madeleine Mantock : Je joue Macy Vaughn.
